Since October 1st 2008 planning permission is required for front driveways and many other hardstanding areas UNLESS it is made of a porous material. Because water runs off non-porous areas into surface drains this increases the risk of flash flooding, which has been a major problem in recent years.
In all urban and many other areas re-laying, or creating new front drives
and other types of hardstanding now has to comply with the new
Sustainable Urban Drainage System (SUDS) regulations.
